CK-12 (www.ck12.org) is a leader in providing standards-aligned 21st century online educational content in the U.S. and abroad. With a mission of reducing the cost, and removing the rigid nature of textbooks, worldwide, CK-12 has developed a free, online system for collaborative, self-publishable educational content that can be customized and individualized in a digital-age textbook known as a FlexBook. Users can choose to write their own content from start or use content provided by CK-12 resources.

FlexBooks are textbooks delivered in a web-based collaborative model where content can be filtered by individual requirements and available on demand in online and print formats (licensing rights are secured through Creative Commons and have some requirements such as sharing of modified content). The modular content can be customized by subject, language and level of difficulty, empowering teachers and students to create and use educational content that is high-quality and engaging.

CK-12's content is authored by subject matter experts and reviewed by domain experts and independent reviewers, as well as a curriculum alignment team, a technical reviewer and a copy editor. With CK-12's FlexBook system, teachers can browse and review existing books and then:

  • Use a FlexBook in its entirety, as is
  • Customize a FlexBook for their classes by selecting from existing chapters and content
  • Edit a FlexBook by changing or adding to the existing content
  • Author original new chapters or an entire FlexBook

The flexibility of CK-12's web platform enables innovation that advances the learning process. For example, CK-12 is in the process of embedding videos into all FlexBooks, addressing standards while also enriching the content and creating iliving FlexBooks. To meet California science standards, and Investigation and Experimentation standards, CK-12 added video as a learning tool into the following FlexBooks: CK-12 Earth Science - High School; CK-12 Biology; CK-12 Biology I - Honors; and CK-12 Chemistry - Second Edition. In addition, two math FlexBooks have also been enriched: Calculus and Advanced Probability and Statistics. These multimedia resources help to further engage students and are a great tool for visual learners

Numerous charter schools work with CK-12, including California-based Leadership Public Schools (LPS), whose teachers are fully embracing the FlexBook concept. LPS recently created three new versions (levels) of CK-12 Biology for students, named College Access Readers, that provide literacy support for ELL students and struggling readers by including videos, additional visuals, and content literacy workbooks.

The need for customized, engaging online content is profound. Teachers are asking for it, students are responding to it and administrators are seeking the budget savings. CK-12 FlexBooks represent a breakthrough in quality educational innovation and are forever changing how educators and administrators are approaching the textbook paradigm.

Due to our ten years of experience and scale, we can do these services more effectively and can save you money.

We have both deep and broad expertise - including charter school-specific accountants, payroll specialists, auditors, and finance specialists all on staff and ready to help you. This level of expertise would be nearly impossible to cobble together on your own and would be prohibitively expensive if you did. We help charter schools with their reporting, including for CALPADS, and with PowerSchool implementation and support. Additionally, our client-specific web portal, Charter Vision, gives you 24/7 access to your latest financial reports and transactions, announcements and files.

The number one reason charter schools in California have closed is due to financial and business mistakes, not educational ones. Let CSMC assist your charter school with all of the 'numbers' so that you can focus on delivering the highest quality educational program possible.

Los Angeles Special Education Improvement Authority

Supported by the California Charter Schools Association, nine Los Angeles charter leaders formed the Los Angeles Special Education Improvement Authority in 2006. Now made up of 65 charter schools representing over 30,000 students, the Authority is working to ensure the best possible services for students with special needs.

The Authority serves as a catalyst for change by providing a forum for dialogue around important special education issues, enabling sharing of expertise and services, and providing a collective voice in advocating for greater autonomy and better policy around special education.

The Authority has been instrumental in bringing about change in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Similar consortiums will soon be established in each major region of California, as a critical step in building the infrastructure and programmatic schemes necessary for charter schools to provide high-quality, innovative services to an increased number and broader range of students with special needs.
